Artist’s Bio: Watercolor painting first revealed its playful aspects on an Adirondack canoe trip…While gliding on the water, a brush was dipped into the water, then used to paint water. It was a wholistic, favorite experience.

As an artist, author and educator, an attitude of “What if….?” is inherent while creating each painting, hand-made book or haiku poem. It may include intentional accidents or experimental techniques. Sometimes pigments are poured and pressed with unusual materials; once dry, an evaluation of the Unfamiliar leads to Unexpected Possibilities. The love of Texture came from training in ceramics so unusual surfaces are chosen for special effects, i.e. Yupo paper or acrylic media. The pigment might be swiped, sprayed, scrubbed, poured or lifted. Or cut up, as was done to “Daybreak”. When that painting was not accepted into a juried show, scissors were used to save the parts that worked, while those that didn’t were discarded. The collage “Daybreak” was accepted into the next juried show. This was the same approach used while writing the book Indigo Hours, Healing Haiku: deleting and shifting parts until only the Necessary remains.
